Introduction

Androgens are steroid hormones that are necessary for normal male phenotype expression, including the outward development of secondary sex characteristics as well as the initiation and maintenance of spermatogenesis.

Many physiological actions of androgens are mediated by the androgen receptor (AR). AR functions as a ligand-dependent transcription factor, regulating expression of an array of target genes that are important in male pubertal development and fertility.

The androgen receptor plays a pivotal role in the prostate. Its primary function is to provide responsive gene products for differentiation and growth, but under abnormal conditions it contributes to the development of prostate cancer.

AR is a 110 kD protein and a member of the steroid/nuclear receptor gene superfamily. The PI3K/Akt pathway regulates AR activity by inducing its phosphorylation at Ser210 and Ser790.
