| Background | Caspase 1 is an intracellular protease that acts to convert inactive pro-IL-1 beta to the active form. Caspase 1 is involved in many aspects of apoptosis, and exists naturally as four isoforms (caspase 1 - beta, caspase 1 - gamma, caspase 1 - delta and caspase 1 - epsilon) generated by alternative splicing. The originally identified isoform is designated caspase-1 alpha. |
